Katie and I have lived in Fairfield for over nine years. In that time, we've hired dozens of contractors for everything from landscaping to roof repairs to random household emergencies. And almost every single time, it meant the same thing: hours scouring Facebook groups, scrolling through old comment threads, and texting friends hoping someone remembered a name. Every project in this town starts with the same question. Does anybody have a guy?

The moment it really clicked for us was our dryer vent stopped working. We needed someone to fix it fast. We spent two straight days looking. Facebook groups, Google searches, nothing. Nobody in Fairfield seemed to have an answer, or if they did, we couldn't find it.

Then Kate's friend came back from vacation. She'd been away the whole time we were searching, so we had no idea she even had a recommendation. So they went on a nightly walk the first night back, Kate brought up the vent issue. Thank God her friend got back when she did. She introduced us to Lu and his son, and who did an amazing job for a completely reasonable price. Problem solved, just like that, once we finally found the right person.

That whole experience stuck with us. If it took two days and a stroke of luck for us to find one person to fix one dryer vent, how many other Fairfield families were stuck in that same loop, for gutters, for HVAC, for a leaky faucet, for a fence that needed fixing? The information was out there. It just wasn't organized, and it definitely wasn't easy to find when you actually needed it.

That's the gap we wanted to fill with Fairfield Town and Trade.

We also realized the newsletter needed to be more than local news and small business spotlights. Sure, we'll cover what's happening around town, and we'll highlight the businesses that make Fairfield feel like Fairfield. But the real value is in the reminders most of us never think about until something breaks. Getting your HVAC system checked before the seasons change. Swapping your air filter on schedule. Cleaning your gutters before the leaves pile up. We're planning on sharing some DIY videos too, for the tasks you can tackle yourself before you need to call anyone at all.

And when you do need to call someone, that's where the directory comes in. It's a separate piece from the newsletter, built specifically to answer that one question we kept asking ourselves for nine years. Does anybody have a guy? Now the answer is yes, and you don't have to wait for a friend to get back from vacation to hear it.

We started this because we lived that frustration ourselves, more than once. We're building Fairfield Town and Trade so the next family with a broken dryer vent doesn't have to spend two days finding their Lu.
