Book your fall cleanup before the leaves drop
The leaves are still on the trees, and that's exactly why this week matters. Once they start coming down, they come down fast, and every good landscaper in town gets booked. The time to lock in your fall cleanup is now.
Some of us rake. Some of us call a pro. This week we've got both covered, starting with the guy who has kept our yard in shape for three years.
Featured Pro: Luis the Landscaper
Every neighborhood has that one guy everybody trusts. For our family, it's Luis.
Luis has taken care of our property for the past three years, and he's the kind of contractor you hold onto. More than once, he's skipped a weekly mowing because the lawn didn't need it, and he didn't charge us for a visit we didn't need. That kind of honesty is hard to find.
In the spring, Luis gets the whole property ready for the season. He preps the flower beds, brings in fresh mulch, and spreads it everywhere it needs to go. In the fall, he handles the closeout: raking, hauling the leaves away, and cutting back our big ornamental grasses for winter. One year, a second round of leaves came down after his cleanup, and he came back on his own to make sure the yard looked right.
Luis does weekly mowing, spring cleanups, fall cleanups, and leaf removal. He doesn't do email, so call or text him at (203) 243-6776. You'll find him in our contractor directory, too.
Doing it yourself? Our 10-minute checklist is below.
Doing it yourself? Don't get skipped on leaf day.
Paper bags only. The town takes leaves in paper bags, left unsealed. Plastic bags, loose leaves, brush, and grass clippings won't be picked up. fairfieldct.org

🍂Your fall weekend checklist🍂
Rake onto a tarp, not into piles. Drag the whole load in one trip with a drawstring yard tarp. Don’t forget the rake!
Stock up on 30-gallon paper leaf bags before the stores run low.

Scoop instead of bending. Leaf scoops fill a bag fast and save your back.
Decide on your ornamental grasses. Cut them back this fall or leave them for winter and cut in spring. provenwinners.com If you cut, hedge shears make quick work of it.
Drain and stow the hoses. A hose left connected can freeze and crack the spigot.
